Mutterings for a Monday

Looks like another beautiful day outside this morning. Too bad I won’t be able to go outside and enjoy it.

The birds outside are driving the kittens nuts again this morning. I actually think they do it on purpose. LOL!

Not happy with this! I thought we were supposed to have a separation of church and state in this country and a President who promised to protect women’s health rights & privacy. When did I vote to put a catholic bishop or any other religious nut or insurance company into office? SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

I worked until I was cross-eyed yesterday finally stopping when Dearest announced that dinner was ready. I even got into bed before 12 AM – now that is a rare occurrence!

Today will be much of the same, so I can’t natter way here as I usually do. I will just leave you with the interesting things below.

I was greeted this morning by Papa Cardinal, who was sitting on a branch outside my office window. He is a brilliant red bird and is very vocal this morning.

Since my Dearest had cooked a couple of dinners in a row I headed to the kitchen last night not knowing what I would make.
I picked up my Moosewood Cookbook found a recipe and immediately fiddled with the ingredients and came up with a vegetable stew filled with leeks, carrots, red cabbage, beets, beet greens, zucchini, garlic, tofu and a few other things that were floating around in the frig. By the end of its cooking the color of this stew was bright red! Dearest, who doesn’t really care for tofu actually liked it judging by the amount eaten. :)

Got a bit of knitting done in between stirring the pot last night. I love to sit on the kitchen window seat in between cooking chores. So do Pucca and Nuit...especially when there is yarn involved.

It got cold here last night. I let the electric blanket warm up the bed and then jumped in accompanied by Danu and Morgan who both snuggled down. I don’t think Danu moved all night for it felt like there was a lead weight across my feet.

I have some reading to do and then I have to start pounding my keyboard. Have a great day!

About the middle of each month my Kiva loans payback so I was able to make another loan through Kiva.org on Saturday. This on went to a group of Bolivian women, some of which knit for a living.

I got to sleep in this morning. Yay! Awoke to find Morgan wedged between Dearest and I, purring like a motorbike because she was getting scratched. Very early this morning she decided to walk all over me – my head included - and I ignored it. I was not getting up at 5 AM today. :)

Cold and rainy here today. I have some work to do, a few errands to run and want to test the hand out by cutting more quilt pieces. We’ll see how that goes.

Ok, were to start…no, just go look.

Weekend ramble

  • Aug. 15th, 2009 at 11:41 AM

SUN! Again! And…I got to sleep in this morning – until Morgan crawled all over me indicating she want to be fed her breakfast.

BBC radio 4 has a program that I listen to quite regularly called On Your Farm. It is always interesting an highlights new ideas that are developing in the farming world. last weekends entry was about a Cumbrain farmer that is actively farming bracken and turning it into compost. I was hoping that the posting had changed for this week so I could listen to it while I typed this morning’s journal entry. No such luck. So I looked below it on the list to see what the program below it, Open Country was discussing this week. Apparently there is an ongoing dispute in Wales between anglers and canoeist over the use of the river Tiefi.

Another program I listen to during the weekend is from Radio Scotland called Out of Doors. Listening to this one you can get you weekly fix of the Scottish brogue and quite often learn something interesting. Now, before you say anything, Dearest only really gets into using the brogue when he is mad. LOL!

In the knitting realm I am almost ready to do the cuff of the first sleeve. On another knitting subject…what happened to my book of knitting stitches that I have had for years? We all go through this every once in a while but it sure is frustrating not being able to find a book on the bookshelf that you know is there. You know what the darn thing looks like but it just eludes you. I will have another go today.

Ok, I guess I should get started with my weekend to do list.

Dear sent me this article that he got from one of his mates.

Snoozling Pucca
It is the “R” word again. It started about 1 AM this morning and continues.

Pucca has just presented herself sans collar. I think this is becoming a game for her. She takes it off and I put it back on. LOL!

Last night after dinner I made an official start to the first sleeve of the Dofuku jacket.

Now she is trying to crawl into my filing cabinet. Who? Pucca, of course. She is just absolutely full of "it" this morning! I need to find some ribbon so I can make a cat toy for her just to wear her out. LOL!

Well, the device that tells me when to cut my hair has turned 50 years old. What am I talking about? The seatbelt.

Needless to say, we did not get to see any of the meteor shower.

We have a full line up of “things-to-today”. It is a good thing that I actually got some sleep last night. LOL! I would love to fit a trip to the yarn shop in but I don’t think it will be possible.

Following the Lost Continent I am now listening to a podcast of Bill Bryson’s Notes From a Small Island about his impressions of traveling around the UK.

Pucca has now crawled onto my lap for the 5th time this morning so I better do some serious uninterrupted scratching. Nope, there she goes chasing a butterfly on the other side of the window. Have a good one!

Big thunderstorms here last night.

As I told you in a previous post we picked up some beautiful beets. I can report that they were yummy but I also can tell you the stalks - or sections of - are wonderful cat toys. Our Pucca entertained me while I made dinner by stalking the section of stalk, attacking it, jumping four feet straight up when the stalk attacked her back, among other various maneuvers. Oh here is a pick of a basket full of peaches. Don't they look good?

Got more knitting done this weekend. I was also trying to get the remainder of the scrap pile ironed but ran out of starch. We did some errands that included the grocery store and I did pick up four more cans. Ironing will continue when I have some free time.

While at the grocery store I noticed this:

Remember the new throne that was installed in my Dearest’s ½ bath? Well, the bowl cracked only a few days after installation. It has now been replaced - much to the cat’s delight - they now have a new throne seat to launch into the bathroom window from.

The bulb catalogs have now started to arrive. Oh my, there are some wonderful new tulips. No, I am not buying any this year.

On the knitting front I have now started the right side of the Dofuku pattern by Vicki Square…doing decreases every 4th row to shape the neck.

Two good things happened yesterday. Sotomayor was confirmed by the Senate and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has restored protections for over 40 million acres of national forests.

Our dear little Mugsy has just used the litter box. How do I know this without even bothering to look? He does his business and then launches himself like a Titan rocket careening through the house and flying across the tops of the furniture all the while vocalizing his happiness at having done so. He cracks me up.

It is already a busy day so I am not going to natter away here this morning. The hummers also have been hovering outside the window to let me know that they want more food. Mugsy is asking for attention and I am getting the idea that this will not be an uninterrupted day. ☺

Our local farmer’s market is today so there will be a break later on. Need some onions. I can also tell you that what ever we cook for dinner this evening will contain mushrooms. Dearest went to the grocery store yesterday and found a sale on button mushrooms. Maybe a bit of Mushroom Stroganoff, yummy!

Ok, it is time for me to get to work so have a great day and don’t miss the video below.

While we were out doing our errands yesterday we drove by our local Elks chapter. They always have announcements of what the bar & grill within is serving. Yesterday’s entrée…Liced Steak. Well, you can imagine the comments we made after reading that little gem. LOL!

I don’t feel like I slept at all last night. It will be an interesting day.

Dearest has gotten a hankering for vegie burgers. Since our local store is far behind the time I went searching for a good recipe. Found three online that sound promising so I will have to give them all a try soon.

My sister and her husband are visiting with my mother. I was surprised to hear that they have not gone to Mom’s LYS (local yarn shop) yet. :)

Get a cup of coffee, it is a long one today

  • Jul. 31st, 2009 at 9:30 AM

Yep, I awoke to the sound of rain.

The shuttle Endeavour is due to land today.

I turned the last corner on the shawl's lace edging last night. Just one more side to do and it is complete!

During lunchtime yesterday I brought the BBC Listen Again widget to the fore and selected the first installment of a program entitled The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson. This installment included memories of the family summer vacation that had me LMAOROF. Oh how true and how good to know that I was not the only one who had these...ah…shall we say…adventures. And the producers had the wisdom to use music by Leo Kottke. Oh by the way if you have never heard Leo Kottke play here is his tour schedule - http://www.leokottke.com/cgi-bin/ontour/leotour.cgi - go see him! OK, I’ll admit it…I’m a fan girl. LOL! Wish he would schedule a tour date somewhere near here. I would drag Dearest to the performance. One of my fav albums, Greenhouse.

Protect the Privacy of Your Health Records - from ACLU online

Earlier this year, the economic stimulus bill contained mandates for converting paper health records into electronic data systems and called for strong privacy protections of those records.

But now, as the Department of Health and Human Services writes the detailed regulations to guide this process, there’s a real risk that your privacy won’t be protected after all.

That’s because powerful special interests are lobbying heavily for regulations that give hospitals and insurance companies -- not patients -- control over how personal medical information is used. This could leave you with no process for blocking access to critical information such as the results of HIV/AIDS tests and eventually, no way to correct false information in your medical records or see who is reviewing those records.

Events are moving quickly. So now is the time to make your voice heard. Send a “protect my privacy” message to Dr. David Blumenthal, the HHS official in charge of this process.

Tell HHS we need real patient control of personal health data in our electronic medical records!

Trying To Damn Health Care For All By Misrepresenting What The Health Care Bill Says…Enter Three STUPID Republicans - and we thought it was only folks like Limbaugh who lied to a national audience. Enter Representatives: John Boehner, the House Minority Leader from Ohio, Thaddeus McCotter, Republican Policy Committee Chairman from Michigan, and Virginia Foxx from North Carolina – they did it by issuing a statement and Foxx even had the audacity to present the lie in a speech on the floor of the House. Don’t believe me, well read this:

The "End of Life" Provision: Republicans' Latest Repeated Lie to Kill the Health Reform Bill - if you want to read the provision these people are trying to misrepresent, it is here - http://www.politico.com/static/PPM130_section_1233.html

Here is the full article:
http://www.care2.com/causes/politics/blog/lets-worry-about-passing-health-care-reform/

Lately, many of us have been pushing our representatives in both the House and the Senate to "READ THE BILL" before voting on it, well, maybe we – the citizens of the US – should also take time to READ THE BILL so when folks like these three spout such boldfaced drivel you know the facts instead of taking it for granted that these people speak the truth.

This behavior proves that the Republican party continues with their MO of repeat a lie often enough and hope voters will believe it.

Dearest just stopped by my office and looked at the above saying, "It is not a proper rant until it is on the 7th page." LOL!

Here is a petition you might want to sign

Stop the Gulf’s Dangerous Open-Ocean Aquaculture Plan Now!
We need a national aquaculture plan to establish sustainable fish farming standards before the Gulf is allowed to move forward with large-scale fish farming. Please send a message to the Secretary of Commerce and NOAA — urging them to reject the Gulf Fishery Council’s ill-advised fish farming plan and instead work with Congress to develop a national framework to guide the aquaculture industry.

A rare day of sun

  • Jul. 30th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
Sleeping Nuit
We had torrential downpours throughout the whole of yesterday and it was on again, off again for our computers. Nice sunny weather today. Wonder how long this will last? It probably will get hot and the humidity will be oppressive. I do have to go outside and clean off the gutter screens and pick up a few fallen branches.

Our niece who lives in Turkey has bought her first home. She is going to have a lot of fun and hard work in front of her but the upside is no more apartments. Here’s a picture of the front of the house.

We picked up a few items at the local farmer’s market yesterday. Beautiful tomatoes, some potatoes and tomatillos. It was a first for Dearest to eat a tomatillo. Verdict…we get more next week. :)

Got some more knitting on the shawl last night while being forced to watch The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1962) starring Glynis Johns (the mother of the children in Mary Poppins).

I finally got a full nights sleep last night. What a relief!

Dearest ordered a new 1TB backup drive yesterday. He came into my office this morning to tell me that he had found an old email note to himself saying that very same drive he ordered would be his next external drive.

H.R. 2749 The Food Safety Enhancement Act
The House of Representatives is working on H.R. 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. It's an attempt to address the worst problems in U.S. agriculture, but as it stands the bill threatens to undermine the best things in U.S. agriculture - small farmers producing for local markets.

H.R. 2749 needs to draw a clear line between small local processors and direct market growers selling locally and the industrial, multi-sourced food supply chains where food borne pathogens have appeared and created problems.

Snoozling Pucca
I know I don’t need to say the “R” word…gloomy, muggy, sticky day, but cooler than yesterday.

I decided to go for it and started the lace edging on the second side of the shawl. Fingers crossed that there will be enough yarn. I would hate to get almost done and run out. LOL!

And I have been meaning to put up a picture of the finished sock I have been rattling on about.

I have to get busy. Work to do. Have a great day!

Red Cat Quilt
Sleep was bit elusive again. I finally got back to bed around 5 am. ARGH!

Baby quilt delivered! YAY!

It will be another hot and muggy day here. The sun is out for the moment but thunderstorms are forecast. Looking at the weather map there are no rain systems near by so I don’t know what they are thinking.

I have a number of things to do today, none of them very interesting but they have to get done…like accu-sucking the upstairs and a load of laundry.

Can't sleep

  • Jul. 26th, 2009 at 11:32 AM
Janes quilt
It is 3 AM Sunday morning and I am up and have started my first cup of coffee.

The first thing I see as I troll the news papers is the announcement of another reality show starring, yes, you guessed it, Octo-mom. Oh my. Why is this being inflicted upon the public? If you can’t tell, I think reality TV is for the birds, to put it nicely.

Went to a party for a friend yesterday. Oodles of people attending that we had not seen in while and catch up with what has been going on in their lives.

Pucca is sitting next to the keyboard at the moment doing her imitation of a Meerkat in alert posture. Cracks me up. And since the subject has come up check out the Animal Planet page on Meerkats. I love the vocalizations. You can also find out which Meerkat you are. LOL! Be sure to watch a few of the videos or do a Meerkat puzzle.

Me
Lots to do today so I will not natter away too long.

Nice big news! My Dearest ([info]realthog) and Joe Dever have signed for an English language reissue of the 12 volumes of The Legends of Lone Wolf series with the publisher (Neal Levin [info]dqg_neal) of Dark Quest Books - the fiction house of the games creators Dark Quest.

I finally got the label sewed onto the baby quilt and can now throw it in the washer and get it to its new owner.

It is a nice sunny day and from the looks of the forecast we had better enjoy it because next week is filled with the “r” word.

Nuit has now begun to jump from the back of my office chair to the top of other chair in my office – it is a long way. It also gives me a fright every time she does it.

I have a mini to-do list today. Two things are now off the list and I will continue to get them one by one.

It continued to rain last night and will do so today.

I finished up the sample of the knitted rose last night before going to bed. It is now steamed and awaiting my attention later this after noon.

Morgan has joined me on the desk this morning and there is a noticeable lack of baby kittens. :) Nuit has somewhat made peace with the gray bombshell but Pucca continues to dislike Ms. Morgan. One of these days they will all be able to be in the same room at the same time.

It is time for me to get this posted and go back to work.
